Checking in on Your Mental Health During the Perinatal Period

 

Let's talk about something that affects many families in Australia – mental health challenges during the perinatal period.

‘Perinatal’ refers to the time from conception through pregnancy, until your baby's second birthday. Not every expectant or new mother experiences challenges with their mental health during this period. For those who do, it’s important to know that it IS treatable and help is available.

 
 

Perinatal mental health challenges are treatable!

Sometimes, parents can go through a tough time mentally during this journey. If they've had mental health struggles before, they may face them again, although this is not a certainty.

These challenges can often go unrecognized or not addressed due to perceived stigma. For these and other reasons, the expectant or new mother may not seek the support, or know what support is available to help them through this time.

Here's a few facts:

  • Stigma often leads to underdiagnosis and insufficient support.

  • 1 in 5 women are affected, with 20% grappling with thoughts of self-harm.

  • In rare cases, about 1 in 1000 new mothers face postnatal psychosis, involving hallucinations.

  • 1 in 3 women experience birth trauma, a factor affecting mental wellbeing.

  • New fathers/partners too, can face challenges; 1 in 10 may struggle, often silently.

  • Beyond anxiety and depression, feelings of isolation and mood shifts are common.

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength. perinatal mental health struggles are treatable!
